2014 Trip - Day 6 - Two kids in a toy shop!

Just a quickie entry again today due to lack of time.

Today was a quieter day given that we will be driving all day tomorrow.  Tomorrow we leave New York City and head for Washington DC.

We wanted to do a few last minute things that were on our to-do list.  The first being going back to Central Park to visit the bridge where we took photos on our first trip here.  There was a picture taken of me on that bridge.  Unbeknownst to my sister, she had her own photo taken in the exactly the same spot around a month later which was a major coincidence. I just wanted to have a photo taken there again just to see how different the park looked compared to my photo and that of my sister.

It was absolutely freezing once again.  So bitterly cold.  There is nothing that I can put on that appears to stop it.  The Bear tells me that it looks like I am wearing a burka, given that I am trying to cover every orifice.  The cold is such that it hurts my face.

Central Park is still a pristine white.  It does not have cars driving all over it to turn the snow into a brown slush.  Most areas are fenced off so that people cant go running just anywhere.  The same fences were in place when we were here in 2012 and it prevented people running over the grass etc.  We noted with interest today, that there are signs warning people to stay off the newly seeded grass.  *insert puzzled look here*. Ok.  Damned if I can find a single blade of grass....but I will comply
.

The park is alive with countless squirrels which appear to be genuinely frolicking.  I am sure they are chasing each other.  They are also wanting to check out the humans.  On more than one occasion I thought one would leap out to land on me (or more importantly, onto animal-annoyer-extraordinaire "the Bear") however whilst the squirrels are courageous little things, they do not come to the point of actually jumping on anyone.

We went to the bridge and took the photos that I wanted.  Everything is frozen which is a total contrast to the Autumn leaves that embellished the photos from 2012.  I cannot recall what was in my sisters photos, although I am assuming there will have been snow.  I will have a look when I can access the internet later.

The Bear wanted to purchase a true New York hotdog before we left, so we stopped at a street vendor whilst still in Central Park. I swear I have never seen a smaller hotdog in my life.  It was no larger than the Bears hand.  I absolutely know that this does not read well but I am damned if I can come up with a better description!  LOL!  Judge for yourself!

We left Central Park and moved on to FAO Schwarz.  It is the toy store that features in one of the Bears favourites movies "Big".  Tom Hanks plays a child who is thrown into an adult body after making a wish at a "Zoltar" machine.  Tom Hanks character gets a job with a toy company.  He visits a toy shop (FAO Schwarz) on the weekend and he meets his boss there.  He and his boss have such a good time, Tom Hanks character is promoted within the toy company.

Well holy crap. I have never seen a place like this.  I cannot even begin to think what a child might think when entering this place.  I mean I saw stacks of kids in there, but in this day and age they expect everything.  I cannot think what a child of my generation would have been like if seeing this toy store.  It blew my mind as an adult.  What a place.

If you want a life size gorilla or grizzly bear to have in your home, well this is the place to go.  For a cool USD1700 you can have this.  Or maybe a King Charles Spaniel pup is more your thing.  You can have that too for USD19.95 (although they are not as life like).  Should you wish to buy someone an original dinosaur tooth, they sell them too although I wasn't game to look at the price.  They are promoted as being the real thing though.  The store has its own baby adoption nursery, with babies in cribs lining hospital nursery windows awaiting for their new "Mummy" to adopt them, Perhaps you might like a robot, which can fly via remote control across the room?  Yep....well that is there too.   For the Bear the most thrilling thing was seeing the giant piano that is seen in the movie.  Its not really a giant piano.....its a giant keyboard that you can use your feet to play music.  I would have LOVE to have had a go at that but there was so many children.  I was adult enough to remember that it was there for them....lol.   This place was just amazing.  Just amazing.

On the way back to the hotel we stopped at Benash Deli to have lunch.  The Bear had wanted to eat at a true New York Delicatessen before we left, and that one was on the way.  It had the standard New York Deli menu.  He had the meatloaf sandwich and I had a toasted Panini. We finished this off by sharing a piece of German Chocolate Cheesecake (I could only manage one mouthful.  It was THAT rich) as this is something else that the New Yorkers love.

The afternoon was spent quietly watching some television and watching the bad weather roll in.  As we left to have some dinner, the snow started lightly falling which was really pretty.  I was very excited at this.  We have seen more snow that I would like to acknowledge and it is not the first time, however mostly the snow falls during the night.  I have not actually seen it snowing for many years.  It was exciting just to be out standing in it and watching it collect on our clothes.  Perhaps this seems like a simple pleasure, but given that we had visited a large toy shop earlier in the day, these childhood pleasures seem to be the theme of the day!
